HOUSE IN SUTTON
Set overlooking Sutton Strand, this project explores the relationship between coastal context, light, and privacy.
The brief emerged from clients returning from warmer climates, seeking to reimagine their newly acquired home to better engage with its southerly aspect and sea views. The challenge lay in balancing openness and outlook with issues of overlooking, solar control, and privacy.
The intervention is articulated as a concrete lattice structure wrapping the front and side of the house, forming a sheltered entrance loggia and a semi-external living space. This threshold condition mediates between public and private realms, allowing the dwelling to open towards the strand while maintaining a sense of enclosure and retreat. Retractable glazing enables the space to shift seasonally, blurring the boundary between inside and out.
Materiality is rooted in place. The washed concrete structure references the robust, utilitarian language of the seaside environment, while integrated timber privacy screens introduce warmth and texture, softening the composition and filtering light. Together, these elements create a layered façade that responds to climate, context, and occupation, enhancing both the spatial experience and environmental performance of the home.
